Sign Program

October 1, 2003, 12:00 Noon, at the Northwest Corner of Broad Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.

Long the Heart of Mobile's African-American Community, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue's history stretches to the city's beginnings. It began as a Spanish Trail and evolved into a dirt track known as Stone Street Road in the 1830's. In 1861, it was renamed Davis Avenue in honor of Jefferson Davis, the confederate President. During the late 19th century, and early 20th centuries, it became a predominantly African-American neighborhood and business/entertainment corridor. Among the musicians who played here were Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald. The Avenue was renamed for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1986 and is today undergoing revitalization.

Please join us for the unveiling.
