Jul 11th, 2003

Coming to Mobile This Summer

What a way to spend their summer! 325 High School Students will begin making repairs, and renovations on homes in Mobile, Monday, July 14, 2003 at 8:00 a.m. The young people are part of the Southern Baptist Youth Rehabilitation Group. They will be in Mobile for one week to assist the Mobile Housing Board in doing outside repair work, renovations, roofing, painting, window repairs and more. Work crews will include adults who are experienced in construction and trained senior high school students. Mobile Mayor Mike Dow and District 4 City Councilman, Ben Brooks will work with the crews on Monday, at 1156 Oliver Street beginning at about 9:00 a.m. Resident Mildred Brunson says she looks forward to watching the young people transform her home.

Volunteers with World Changers/House Calls picked Mobile as their work city this summer over 70 other cities. 19 homes in Mobile City Council District 4 have been selected for the work. Residents applied for the service several months ago through the Mobile Housing Board.

Crews will arrive in Mobile Saturday, July 12, 2003. They will begin with an opening celebration at 7:30 at the First Baptist Church of Satsuma, located off Highway 43, next to Bayou Avenue. Sunday, following church services and lunch, at about 2:00 p.m. crews will visit their work sites to look over the scope of their project and to meet the residents. On Monday "The Great Send Off" begins at 7:00 a.m. in the church Sanctuary. At about 7:30 a.m. crews will head to their assigned homes and begin work by 8:00 a.m.
