Aug 9th, 2011

Mobile Area Water & Sewer System (MAWSS) is pleased to announce the winners of the fifth annual “Fun with Water” Watercolor Contest. The contest asked kids and teens to paint a watercolor of their favorite summer activity involving water. The 200 entries were displayed at Bel Air Mall where celebrity judges, Q-Tip from WABB, Shelby Mitchell from WKSJ and Angela Martin from WPMI NBC15, selected the winners. The awards ceremony will take place at the Art Walk, August 12, at 6:30 p.m. in Cathedral Square.

This year, three of the five winners were from Theodore High School. This year’s overall winner is Trinity Barber for the painting titled, Splish Splash. Barber will receive a $100 gift card from Bel Air Mall. Art teacher, Christy LeGros, will receive a matching prize.

Alyssa Sauce of Theodore High School was the winner in the 17-18 year age group for her work titled, Beach Baby. Katelyn McLester, also of Theodore High School won the 15-16 age group for her painting, Sunset on the Bay. Savannah Morgan from Dunbar Magnet School is the winner in the 11-14 year age group for Splash. Catherine Chung of Hutchens Elementary School won the 6-10 year age group for Summer Puppy Love. Winners for each age group will receive a $50 gift card from the Mall. In addition, all winning artwork will hang in MAWSS’ Catherine Street lobby for the public to enjoy over the next year.

The “Fun with Water” Watercolor Contest was developed to educate area youth about the importance clean water plays in our daily lives.

“This year’s entries depicted a wide variety of activities, from playing in the sprinkler to deep sea diving to canoeing on the river. All of these activities require clean water,” said Barbara Shaw, MAWSS Public Affairs Manager. “We hope this artwork inspires everyone to do their part to keep our waters clean.”

The winning artwork can be viewed on the MAWSS website, www.mawss.com under the heading, “What’s New at MAWSS”.

Note to editors: In the event of rain, the ceremony will take place in Space 301.
