WEST MOBILE FILES PETITION FOR INCORPORATION

Feb 7th, 2003

For the fourth time in less than 18 months, the Committee to Incorporate West Mobile has filed a petition asking for a vote to form a new city. Mobile County Probate Judge Don Davis has set a February 25 election.

According to Mobile Mayor Mike Dow, "Incorporating is sort of a death rattle of our economic strength. I think it?s going to hurt us severely. It's going to fragment our city, put a little ring of underfunded cities around us."

The committee's spokesman says about 20,000 people live in the proposed incorporation area. It's generally bounded by Cody Road on the east side, Howell's Ferry road on the north Snow Road on the west and Cottage Hill Road on the south end.

The election is set from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm in the fellowship hall of Creekwood Church of Christ, 1901 Schillinger Road.
