Nov 30th, 2004

Volunteers of America Southeast Awarded Over $1.4 Million to Build Low-Income Senior Adult Housing Complex

Mobile, Ala., Nov. 30 - Volunteers of America Southeast has been awarded $1,446,400 to be used in the construction of an apartment complex for low-income elderly persons in Selma, Alabama.  The facility will include 19 one-bedroom units as well as one two-bedroom unit for a residential manager.

The site for the complex, located in an established district of Selma, is close to several shopping and amenity areas for easy accessibility for residents.  A hospital and medical facility are also in close proximity providing for convenient health care services.

Construction on the apartment complex is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2005 and should take approximately 18 months to complete.  The apartment complex will be managed and operated by Volunteers of America Southeast under our affordable housing program.

"We are continuing our efforts to provide affordable, quality homes to our citizens.  We are delighted to have received this funding to further those efforts and look forward to working with Volunteers of America Southeast in the development of this critically needed housing.  I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to the Selma community to mobilize and support these efforts," stated Selma Mayor James Perkins.

Volunteers of America Southeast currently operates ten quality affordable housing communities for elderly citizens in Brewton, Eight Mile, Enterprise and Opp, Alabama; in Jackson and Vicksburg, Mississippi; and in Sandersville and Americus, Georgia.  With one more in construction in Waycross, Georgia. Housing is also provided in Mobile and Foley, Alabama, and in Thomaston and Milledgeville, Georgia, for low-income elderly and disabled residents to link residents with community services that assist residents in maintaining independence in various housing sites.

"Without this grant the apartment complex would not be possible.  Providing affordable housing for senior adults is a part of our mission of reaching and uplifting by enabling people to live their lives to the fullest and as independently as possible," stated Wallace Davis, President and CEO of Volunteers of America Southeast.
