...Receiving Their First White CoatsStudents in the University of South Alabama College of Medicine Class of 2006 are preparing for the annual White Coat Ceremony scheduled for May 7, 2005 at 10 a.m. in the USA Student Center Ballroom.
This ceremony marks an important milestone in each student's medical education. USA times this event to mark their transition from the first two years of classroom and laboratory instruction to the two years of clinical rotations in the USA Health System.
During the ceremony, the class will be presented with their first white coat and recite the medical student oath, emphasizing the professionalism and empathy in the practice of medicine.
Dr. John Bass, professor of internal medicine at the USA College of Medicine, will provide the keynote address.
The White Coat ceremony reinforces the need for physicians to incorporate sensitivity, compassion and medical knowledge into their future endeavors. The ceremony also serves to recognize and show appreciation to the faculty, parents, family members and others who have played a role in the success of each student.
The USA Medical Alumni Association sponsors this annual event. Graduates of the USA College of Medicine now number more than 1,700.
