U.S. Department of Justice Approves Annexations, Council Redistricting

The United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division has given preclearance to the four annexations, City Council redistricting, and polling place realignment that have occurred within the past two years. This means that, according to the Voting Rights Act, the changes do not adversely affect the voting rights of minorities for the upcoming municipal election on August 25, 2009.

The annexations include Mobile Terrace/Schillinger Road, Mobile Regional Airport, Theodore, and Windmill Place. Council redistricting and the polling place realignment were approved by the Council earlier this year.
