United States Postal Service Designs Pictorial Cancellation to Honor BayFest’s 15th Anniversary

Sep 24th, 2009

BayFest is excited to announce that the United States Postal Service has designed a special pictorial cancellation to celebrate BayFest’s 15th Anniversary. A cancellation is a postal marking made on a letter, package, postcard or the like indicating the date and time that the item was delivered into the care of the postal service and to prevent the stamp from being re-used. The special postmark will be available only at BayFest, and will be used on any mail sent from the Post Office on Wheels, a fully-functioning mobile post office. The Post Office on Wheels will be located in the children’s and family area at Bienville Square and will be open for business from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. A limited number of complimentary commemorative BayFest 2009 postcards will be available at the festival and postcard stamps can be purchased on site from the Post Office on Wheels for 28 cents each.

At the request of Mobile’s Postmaster, Veronica Johnson, the cancellation was designed by Marvin Owens of USPS Delivery Operations in Birmingham. It features the Middle Bay Lighthouse and the Sand Island Lighthouse, which are both located in the Mobile Bay area.

The 15th Annual BayFest Music Festival will be held October 2-4, 2009 in the streets of Downtown Mobile.
