Train Whistles to Go Silent in Downtown Mobile

Nov 19th, 2008

Some have said Mobile is the “City That Never Sleeps” because late night train whistles keep hotel guests and residents awake. That won’t be the case any longer as city leaders have reached an agreement with CSX Transportation to create a Quiet Zone in downtown.

Starting at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, November 20, locomotives traveling through downtown will not blow their horns when approaching the intersections of Adams Street, St. Anthony Street, Dauphin Street, Government Street, Monroe Street, and Eslava Street.

Additional safety measures have been put in place at these crossings to alert drivers to oncoming trains including more signage, increased signals, and improved safety medians. Also, the crossings at Adams Street and St. Anthony Street have been closed to drivers.
