The Big Pour

Oct 31st, 2003

RSA Battle House Office Tower Support Layer Ready to be Poured

Can you imagine pouring 8,000 cubic yards of concrete for 24 hours? That's what it’s going to take to create the foundation mat for the 35 story RSA Battle House Office Tower in Mobile.

Work on the "Big Pour" will begin Friday evening, November 7, 2003 and contractors say it will take 24 hours to pour the 7-foot-6-inch thick pad that is equivalent to 30 miles of 4-foot-wide sidewalk. Once the work begins, it will continue-rain or shine.

The work is scheduled on a Friday evening, so the job will be finished by Monday morning. Dauphin Street, St. Frances Street and St. Michael Street between Royal and Water Streets will be closed at 7:00 p.m. for the pours beginning November 7-9 and again the next weekend November 21-23 for a smaller pour. Streets will be re-opened by midnight Sunday.

Nearby business have been notified and the Senior Bowl, 10K run scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8, downtown will not be affected. There will be plenty of security and barricades to keep the area secure. Access to the area along the south side of Dauphin Street will be restricted to only those personnel with proper credentials.

A good place to watch the pour or to take photographs is the upper level balcony at the Convention Center.
