Sweet P's Training Program

Sep 7th, 2005

100 teens in Mobile Housing Board’s summer jobs program

Approximately 100 students ages 16-21 are participating in the Mobile Housing Board’s Summer Work Employment Experience Training Program, called SWEET P. Today we have those students and Adline Clark with us to tell us about the special program.
This is the 10th and final week of this summer’s program, which was funded by local businesses, the Mobile Housing Board, and the Mobile City Council. The purpose of the program is to provide basic jobs skills training, as well as actual work experience, for students from low- and moderate-income households.
The students received three (3) weeks of job training. Then they received seven (7) weeks of on-the-job training in the public and private sector. The job sites include the following offices and facilities:
Municipal Information Systems
City’s Payroll Department
Mobile’s Convention and Civic centers
City’s Public Buildings Department
Municipal, Circuit and District Court
City Parks & Recreation Department
City’s Purchasing Department
Mobile Public Library branches
City’s Architectural Engineering Department
And also the Mayor’s Office.

Again, these are just some of this summer’s SWEET P job sites.

In addition to attending today’s City Council meeting, the student workers will also attend a noon luncheon, where they will be awarded certificates of completion. The Mobile Housing Board thanks the Mobile City Council, and the Mayor and his staff for their continuous support of the program and we hope that you will all join us for lunch today.
