STATEMENT BY MAYOR SANDY STIMPSON - Conclusion of Department of Justice Investigation

Mobile, Ala. -- Today the U.S. Department of Justice announced the completion of its independent, federal investigation into the fatal shooting of Michael Moore, saying that after a review of the evidence it will not pursue criminal charges against the Mobile police officer involved in the incident.

The City of Mobile called for the independent investigation within the first 12 hours following the June 13, 2016, officer involved shooting.

The investigation by the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, based in Washington, D.C., involved a comprehensive review of the evidence and took more than a year to complete.

Today's announcement by the Justice Department represents the final in a series of investigations associated with the death of Mr. Moore, following parallel reviews by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Mobile County District Attorney's Office.

A Mobile County grand jury, after reviewing the facts of the case and hearing more than 40 hours of testimony last year, did not pursue criminal charges against the officer.
The police officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave during the course of the Justice Department investigation. The officer submitted his resignation to the Mobile Police Department effective September 2, 2017.
