State Needs Help to Eliminate Apple Snails

Sep 28th, 2009

The State of Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources Division of Wildlife & Freshwater Fisheries is doing something about the infestation of Apple Snails in Three Mile Creek - and they need help. They need people to help scrape apple snail eggs off all hard or vegetative surfaces and remove them. Eggs will be collected into buckets and dropped into dry ice containers at designated stations. The work above will be done in conjunction with an application of an EPA-approved chemical, copper sulfate. Treatment work will occur from October 3 through October 11, and possibly October 18 if a second chemical application is performed.

The attachments below outline in detail what is expected of most of the working group. If you plan to assist us and unless you are otherwise notified, we will meet to do treatment work at the first large parking lot next to the boardwalk bridge at Langan Park Lake. This location is on the North side of the lake across from the Mobile Museum of Art. Langan Park is located off of Ziegler Road. If you are coming from out of town and are unfamiliar with the area, take EXIT 5A (Spring Hill Avenue) off of I-65. Turn West and follow Spring Hill Avenue about 4 miles. As you pass through traffic lights, you will cross over the dam at Langan Park Lake (on your left). Spring Hill becomes Zeigler Road, and you will travel about another half mile to the first turn into the city park at Ludlow Circle. Follow about 0.25 miles to first parking lot at left.
