Spring Prayer Service at SHC to Also Aid Tsunami Victims

Jan 12th, 2005

Mobile, Ala. — The public is invited to join faculty, staff and students for an ecumenical spring semester prayer service Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 12:15 p.m., at St. Joseph Chapel. Similar to the Mass of the Holy Spirit each fall, this prayer service is an opportunity for the College to come together as a community of faith to pray for God's guidance in the new semester. It is the long-standing tradition of Catholic schools to gather in prayer at the beginning of each semester to ask the Spirit to guide them in all they do. Classes will be cancelled and offices will close for the event.

Along with opening the new semester, a collection will be taken at the service to be sent to the national Jesuit Refugee Services to aid tsunami victims in Asia. Funds collected will be combined with proceeds from funds raised at a home basketball game Jan. 10 and with any material goods collected.

"It seems appropriate, as we celebrate a Year of Solidarity at Spring Hill College, to stand together with our brothers and sisters around the world who are in need at this time, especially those who have been victims of the tsunami in Asia," said Spring Hill President Gregory F. Lucey. "We ask God to strengthen and encourage us to use our gifts to do God’s work in our community and in our world."
