Spring Hill College Awarded $1 Million for Scholarship Program

May 17th, 2004

Mobile, Ala. - Having witnessed the success of its Scholars Fund at Spring Hill following an initial $500,000 grant in 2000, The Goizueta Foundation has awarded Spring Hill College an additional $1 million to expand the program. The grant will be used to strengthen the endowment for The Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund and will allow the College to increase the amount of its annual scholarship total from $30,000 to $90,000 for Hispanic and Latino students interested in becoming leaders and who may not otherwise be able to afford to attend Spring Hill.

Spring Hill College President Gregory F. Lucey, S.J., said that by providing even more access to Hispanic students with financial need and with potential for leadership, The Goizueta Foundation is helping Spring Hill College further extend the inclusiveness of its student body and ultimately make an even greater impact on the communities in which these students will live and work.

"This significant award by The Goizueta Foundation is a reflection of the commitment shared by the Spring Hill Community—particularly the Admissions staff, Student Affairs staff and our faculty—to not only give more students the opportunity to share the Spring Hill experience, but to cultivate responsible leaders for today's changing society," Lucey said.

The Goizueta Foundation was established in 1992 by Roberto C. Goizueta, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of the Coca-Cola Company. A native of Cuba and a graduate of Yale University, Goizueta felt deeply that the nation's future and the focus of our country's youth depended on the strength of the American family. The purpose of The Goizueta Foundation is to assist organizations that empower individuals and families at risk through educational opportunities to improve their quality of life.

At least $90,000 in scholarships will be available each year to freshmen and transfer students as well as current Spring Hill students beginning fall of 2005.
