Section of Old Shell Rd. will temporarily close for tree care operations
Mobile, Ala. — The City of Mobile will coordinate a tree care operation this weekend that will temporarily impact traffic along Old Shell Road near Wilmer Hall.
Saturday, Oct. 5, and Sunday, Oct. 6, Old Shell Road will be temporarily closed from Batre Lane to Myrtlewood Lane between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. so trees in the public right-of-way can be pruned, trimmed, and in some cases, removed. This project will focus primarily on overly mature Laurel Oaks and Water Oaks along the stretch of Old Shell Road between Myrtlewood and Batre lanes.
The trees included in this project were evaluated by a team of certified arborists following American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A300 Tree Care standards for tree health, risk management, and public safety. In particular, the trees addressed through this project have shown signs of defects or disease or present a hazard to public safety, public property or nearby utility lines.
Cain's Tree & Landscape, Inc., will perform this work under the supervision of the City of Mobile’s Department of Urban Forestry. While the tree care operations are in progress, Old Shell Road will be closed between Batre and Myrtlewood lanes.
There will be marked detours for traffic, and personnel will be on-site to ensure that local traffic and neighborhood residents can access their homes. The detour for eastbound traffic will run from northbound Tuthill Lane to E. Springhill Ave. to the I-65 Service Road S. The westbound detour route will be southbound I-65 Service Rd. to westbound Dauphin St. to northbound McGregor Ave.
