Sail Mobile - A Salute to the Sea

Jun 18th, 2002

The sky over downtown will be filled with fireworks and ship masts as Mobile celebrates July 4th, and begins the four-day Tricentennial anniversary celebration "Sail Mobile -- A Salute to the Sea." Beginning at noon on Thursday, July 4th Mobile River will be filled with ten Class A, B and C tall ships as the Parade of Ships begins up the river passing Cooper Riverside Park where they will dock for the holiday weekend. To help you celebrate the day plenty of entertainment has been planned. Children's activities will start at noon and music is scheduled throughout the afternoon. The Dog River Boys, a local bluegrass band, will kick-off the line-up at 2:00 p.m. UgliStick will take the stage at 4:00 p.m. followed by Sharon Moore who will perform at 6:00 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. Mobile will hold our traditional July 4th concert by the Mobile Symphonic Pops followed by fireworks beginning at 9:00 p.m. A very special theatrical production of "Red Tide" will take place from the rigging of the Class C tall ship "Caravan Barge" at 9:15 p.m. This unique performance, by actors who are also members of the ship's crew, will be the first in a series of nightly productions that Mobilians will be treated to during the "Sail Mobile" weekend.

Beginning on Friday, July 5, and continuing through Sunday, July 7, the tall ships will be available for touring from 10:00 a.m.until 5:00 p.m. Tour sites are the Mobile Convention Center, Cooper Riverside Park and Mobile Landing. Tours are free and open to the public. Nightly entertainment from "Caravan Barge" is scheduled in Cooper Riverside Park.
