Safe Routes to School Sidewalk Projects to Begin

Jul 30th, 2012

Sidewalk construction is scheduled to begin work this week on several streets around Howard Elementary School on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Avenue and Holloway Elementary School on Stanton Road. The work, which includes sidewalk, signs, roadway striping and pedestrian signals, is part of a $300,000 Safe Routes to School grant awarded to the City. These two schools are part of a larger group of schools from around the state selected for infrastructure improvements.

In the area around Howard Elementary, new sidewalk will be constructed along parts of Kennedy Street, Lyons Street, Cherry Street and Basil Street. The school crossing in front of the school on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Avenue will also be upgraded, as well as the pedestrian crossings at the signalized intersection of Broad Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Avenue.

Construction work around Holloway Elementary will include new sidewalk along Pennington Street, Hart Avenue, Holland Street, Duke Avenue, Wagner Street, and Wellington Street. Crosswalks along Stanton Road will also be upgraded.

Safe Routes to School is a 100% federally funded program that provides grant opportunities for schools, primarily kindergarten through sixth grade.
