Royal Street Goes Two-way

Jan 31st, 2007

Mayor Sam Jones threw the switch to make Royal Street a two-way thoroughfare on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at the corner of St. Louis and Royal Streets.

The conversion is being made to make downtown more driver and pedestrian friendly. Changes in infrastructure such as this support downtown redevelopment. As redevelopment occurs and people return to downtown, implementing a pedestrian-oriented street system with easy access to multiple venues is preferred.

The conversion involved seven new traffic signals with a total price tag of about $350,000. Royal Street was originally a two-way street, before becoming one-way in the 1960s.
