Oct 21st, 2004

Three chefs from the Riverview Plaza will compete with three surgeons from the University of South Alabama Children's and Women's Hospital in the fifth annual pumpkin carving contest Friday, October 29, from 6 to 8 pm at the Riverview Plaza Hotel.

The executive chef leading the Riverview team will be Chef George Mate, a summa cum laude graduate of the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson and Wales University in Miami, Florida, who has years of experience in his field. Mate was born in Hungary and emigrated to the United States in l984. He has worked in various steak houses, country clubs and hotels building his exquisite culinary and carving techniques.

The chefs and doctors will use their skills to carve the most creative pumpkin. Immediately after the carving contest, a live auction will occur giving attendees the opportunity to own one of the coveted treasures to decorate their home. The team raising the most proceeds for USA Children's and Women's Hospital will win the contest. There will also be a silent auction during the event.

The pumpkin contest, which is open to the public, will also include such carnival games as a cake walk, face painting, duck pond, ring toss, ball toss and others. Any child who comes in costume may participate in the children's costume contest. Admission to the event is free and game tickets are $1.00 each. All proceeds from this event will benefit the USA Children's and Women's Hospital.
