Recycle Those Aluminum Cans!
Oct 7th, 2009
Mayor Sam Jones announced today that the City of Mobile is going for the top cash prize of $5,000 by participating in the Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge. The national contest, created by the United States Conference of Mayors, The Novelis Corporation and Keep America Beautiful, challenges cities across the country to recycle aluminum beverage cans. The challenge lasts four weeks and officially started on October 1 and will end on October 31, 2009.Locally, The City of Mobile through the department of Keep Mobile Beautiful is competing for the top $5000 cash prize, which will be used for recycling education and awareness programs throughout the community. Mayor Jones is encouraging individuals, schools, businesses, and community groups to recycle aluminum cans. By doing so they can earn money for their organization and help Mobile win!
Anyone who wants to participate may recycle aluminum cans and earn cash for themselves or their groups at any local aluminum can recycler. Consult your telephone book yellow pages for a buy-back recycler near you. Or you may drop them off at The Metro Mobile Recycling Center located at 1451 Government Street which is a drop off location only. All aluminum cans must be turned in for recycling during the month of October in order to count for the contest. You may contact Keep Mobile Beautiful at 208-6028 for further information.
Aluminum is the most valuable material in the household that can be recycled. However, only about 55% of all aluminum cans produced annually are recycled. Last year over $1 billion worth of aluminum cans produced were thrown away instead of being recycled. According to the Novelis Corporation web site, "When people look for ways to help the planet and reduce their carbon footprint, one easy thing they can do is make sure their empty cans go into the recycling box, not the garbage bin. Every aluminum can that is recycled saves enough energy to run a television set for three hours, and there is no limit to the number of times it can go around the recycling loop."
Recycling begins with one Can! Let’s prove that we have the best recycling program in the country! We can do it Mobile!
Turn in those cans and help us win the 5 grand can contest.
