Jul 1st, 2014

Mobile, Ala. - Mayor Sandy Stimpson today announced the appointment of U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Richard B. Landolt (retired) as Executive Director of Public Safety for the City of Mobile.

Landolt served as Director of Operations and Cyber at U.S. Africa Command and as commander of the Amphibious Force for the 7th Fleet (Task Force 76) in Okinawa, Japan. He also served in the Pentagon as Director, International Engagement on the Navy staff.

"It is a rare opportunity being able to recruit someone of Rich's caliber to city government," said Mayor Stimpson. "His leadership, global perspective and commitment to local solutions make him an invaluable member of my executive staff. He has served his country honorably and with distinction over a 30 year military career. I am honored he has accepted a position to now serve, more directly, the citizens of Mobile."

In his newly created position, Landolt will oversee the Mobile Police and Fire-Rescue Departments and the Safety and Performance Department.

Landolt also will be charged with developing and implementing the City's emergency preparedness plan, taking advantage of his experience in crisis and emergency management. In addition, Landolt will lead the City's effort to implement performance measures across all City functions and departments.

He will start in the new job effective immediately.

"I have been coming to Mobile for more than 40 years to visit family and friends in the area, and I am excited by this opportunity to serve the community as part of Mayor Stimpson's administration," Landolt said.

Landolt is a native of Suffern, N.Y., who was raised in New Jersey and Florida. He received his commission via the Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps unit at the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

He holds a Master of Science degree in Telecommunications Systems Management from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., and is a graduate of the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College.

Landolt commanded three vessels including the USS Gladiator, Ardent and Fort McHenry. In 1997, as the Commanding Office of the Gladiator, Landolt and crew were received in Mobile as the guest ship for Mardi Gras.

Landolt and his wife, Beth, are the parents of a son. They plan to relocate to Mobile soon.
