Public Invited to Say Goodbye to USS Independence
Mar 22nd, 2010
The citizens of Mobile are cordially invited to Cooper-Riverside Park to see the USS Independence off on its trip to its new homeport on Friday, March 26, 2010 at about 9:30 a.m. Bring a flag to wave or, if you have a club who gives out flags, bring a bundle. This ship and its crew have been in Mobile for over a year while the ship has been built and finished. The LCS project has meant hundreds of millions in economic impact to south Alabama. The commissioning of the Independence earlier this year was one of the biggest maritime events in the history of Alabama, particularly important because this ship is the smartest, fastest and most advanced ship in the history of the Navy and built right here in Mobile.
Thousands of people here have had a role in the Independence, all the way from welding it together to watching it grow, entertaining the crew and enjoying such a thing in Mobile.
