For Immediate Release:

Public input sought on Africatown Welcome Center design

Mobile, Ala. — The City of Mobile and its design team, led by Mott MacDonald, are continuing to seek public input on the design of the future Africatown Welcome Center. Funded by the RESTORE Act, the Africatown Welcome Center will be an essential asset for the community. It will also be an early stop for visitors who come to learn more about Africatown’s founders and the last slave ship, Clotilda. The City of Mobile began seeking community input on design concepts in April, and a full design is expected to be completed later this year. Using input from two public meetings and a previous public survey, our team has selected a structural design concept. We are now seeking input on possible exterior finishes, wall coverings and other design elements that will be incorporated inside the building. To gather that feedback, we have launched a second community survey that will be open through August 11. You can find it by clicking here. We appreciate everyone who has helped guide this process so far, and we would be grateful for any additional feedback from local stakeholders and members of the Africatown community. If you have questions, please email our staff at africatownwelcomecenter@cityofmobile.org. You can also sign up for text notifications about the project by texting MOBILEAFRICATOWNWC to 91896.
