Mar 18th, 2008

At the Tuesday, March 18 City Council meeting, Mayor Jones read a proclamation honoring the Mobile Association for Retarded Citizens (MARC). March was proclaimed "Mental Retardation Awareness Month" and MARC was recognized for thier tremendous work for our citizens living with mental retardation. Lindsay Hutchinson, the PR and Director of Development at MARC, along with several consumers were on hand to receive the proclamation.

March was also proclaimed Mobile Fire Fighters Appreciation Month, at the request of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Mobile fire fighters will once again this year hold their "Fill the Boot" campaign to raise money for MDA. Last year, our fire fighters raised a record-breaking $33,500, again making them MDA’s largest source of funding. Mobile Fire-Rescue Chief Steve Dean accepted the proclamation.

Also, Councilwoman Gina Gregory gave McKemie Place a proclamation, marking the first anniversary of the shelter for single homeless women. McKemie Place housed 294 women in its first year and they expect to serve 400 women in 2008. Jamie Praytor, chairwoman of the Chronic Homeless Task Force, accepted the proclamation.
