Proclamations: Dr. Velma Scantlebury-White

Jun 17th, 2008

At the June 17, 2008 City Council meeting, Mayor Sam Jones presented a proclamation to Dr. Velma Scantlebury-White. Dr. Scantlebury-White became the nation’s first African American female transplant surgeon when she accepted a position at the University of South Alabama, where she also served as professor of surgery, assistant dean for community education, director of the division of transplantation, and director of the USA Regional Transplant Center.

Dr. Scantlebury-White will be relocating soon, and the Mayor and City Council wanted to thank her for her dedication to her patients and the citizens of Mobile.

Mayor Jones also participated in a check presentation from Waste Management to Keep Mobile Beautiful, Inc. to be used in an anti-litter media awareness campaign. The $5,000 check will be used to film and air PSAs featuring the Mayor and other Mobile citizens in conjunction with the Mayor’s second Litter Summit to be held June 28, 2008 at the Harbor Communications Center at Hank Aaron Stadium.
