Proclamations and Announcements: Mentoring Month, Neighborhood College, Parking Meter Collections
Jan 27th, 2009
Mayor Jones issued a proclamation to Aimee Risser, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Alabama, Board Member Anne Hirschfeldt along with the Big Brothers Big Sisters staff that were at the January 27 Council Meeting in honor of January being proclaimed as National Mentoring Month. Mentoring Month is an opportunity to recognize the importance mentoring can have on the life of a child, to thank the individuals who mentor and to encourage mentoring within our community. Also, Central Parking and the City's own Neighborhood & Community Services Department teamed up again this year to help give back to the community during the holiday season. This past December, a week's worth of proceeds from parking meters around both Cathedral and Bienville Squares were collected to be donated to a worthy cause. This year, our designated charity, McKemmie Place, is a tremendous organization that does tremendous work for both the City of Mobile as well as those women who wish to call it home. Through the efforts of this organization, women can safely find refuge within our City and can get a helping hand along their journey home. Mayor Jones and Central Parking Manager David Buchanon presented the check.
Neighborhood and Community Services Assistant Manager Chris Barraza introduced another program being initiated by our Neighborhood and Community Services Department. In an effort to orient our citizens with the inner-workings of our city, how it functions and how to more easily access our services, we proudly introduce our first-ever Neighborhood College.
