Police Department Celebrates "National Night Out"

Aug 4th, 2008

Mobile police are staging the annual “going away party for crime” along with a Crime Prevention Run/Walk as part of its community National Night Out celebration starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The separate events will take place in downtown Mobile and at Colonial Bel-Air Mall.

The Excelsior Band will lead a parade of police officers, neighborhood partners, individuals and faith organizations at the shopping mall. The parade will start at 6:30 p.m. and make a round through the mall to celebrate the successes of organized citizens who have transformed neighborhoods with the help of the Mobile Police Department. The evening’s events will include a self-defense demonstration, a gospel singing group, and an Elvis imitator. Prizes will be given away throughout the night.

The neighborhood organizations represent some of the more than 80 community groups that are working with the Mobile Police Department on a monthly basis to improve their neighborhoods. Officers meet with citizens at these Community Action Group (CAG) meetings and bring the full resources of the city, whether it’s specialized police officers or other city departments delivering services to neighborhoods.

The downtown 5K Run/Walk will also start at 6:30 p.m. on Royal Street. Registration and Post-race activities will be held at Bienville Square. The certified 5K race will award prizes and food and beverages will be provided.

National Night Out is a nationwide program sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. For more information on National Night Out or other crime prevention activities, call the Mobile Police Department at 208-1924.
