Police Checks Keep Streets Safer

On April 29, 2006, the Mobile Police Department ended its two-day operation involving DUI Safety Check Points. The operation was conducted at various intersections throughout the Mobile Police Department’s jurisdiction. Those intersections included Herdon Ave @ Old Shell Rd., Gayle St. @ Garrity St., Azalea Rd. @ Highway 90, Bit & Spur Rd. @ University Blvd., Grelot Rd. @ Somerby Dr., Moffett Rd. between Helen Dr., University Blvd.,Upham St @ Old Shell Rd., Donald St. @ Wagner St., and Josephine St. @ Western Dr.

In total the operation resulted in 412 traffic citations issued to drivers with a majority of those being for No Insurance and driver’s license violations. There were a total of 44 misdemeanor arrests and 5 felony arrests. Four of the misdemeanors were DUIs. 8 vehicles were towed and 3 weapons were seized along with $6,000 in U.S. currency from drug related arrests.

According to interim Police Chief Lester Hargrove, the grand total for both days are as follows: 942 citations, 79 misdemeanor arrests (6 DUIs), 8 felony arrests, 24 towed vehicles and 5 seized weapons.
