Jan 23rd, 2012

The City of Mobile, Mayor's Office of Strategic Initiatives reports that the pilot site of the City of Mobile Community Garden Project has been completed. In a true spirit of cooperation, multiple forces came together to participate in and support the City of Mobile Community Garden Project initiative. The result is a beautiful garden, with six raised beds, a seating area and a decorative flower garden area located in the Plateau community on Whitley Street, across from the Mobile County Training School.

The garden effort was successful, thanks to the participation of key stakeholders in the City of Mobile Community Garden Project, including, Kimberly-Clark, the Home Depot Foundation, the Mobile County Training School Alumni Association, Inc., Mobile County Public Schools, Mobile County Training School, the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, the Mobile County Commission, the Bryant Career Technical School, the Botanical Gardens, and the Penn Family.

Joining Mayor Jones in the Garden Dedication ceremonies is the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries Deputy Commissioner, Brett Hall, who will share the state's vision for community gardens.

The City of Mobile, Mayor's Office of Strategic Initiatives is coordinating the dedication activities for the garden. Official City of Mobile Community Gardens Stakeholders Recognition ceremonies are scheduled to take place at the City Council meeting that is scheduled for Tuesday, January 24th, 2012 at 10:30am in the Government Plaza Auditorium. The public is invited to this celebration, including refreshments in The Blue Room, following the City Council meeting.
