Penny Sales Tax Hike Ends Friday

Sep 29th, 2011

Effective October 1, 2011, the tax rate for some businesses in the City of Mobile will go down by a penny, the amount temporarily levied last year by city officials. The penny increase was levied in an effort to allow the city to remain financially solvent during a downturn in the economy.

“The city’s Revenue Department will be mailing notices and tax forms to affected businesses in November so businesses can begin reporting October taxes at the new rate.”

The following are the rates once the penny ends:

City

General, Amusements, Vending, Lease - 4%
Automotive, Machine, Farm - 2%

Police Jurisdiction

General, Amusements, Vending, Lease - 2%
Automotive, Machine, Farm - 1%

You may contact the City of Mobile Revenue Department at 251-208-7462 if you need assistance or have questions.

* THIS TAX CHANGE DOES NOT INCLUDE FOOD & BEVERAGE, LODGING, MOTOR VEHICLE RENTAL, GASOLINE, WINE, OR TOBACCO TAX.
