Mobile’s new Public Safety Complex in west Mobile opens today, as the Mobile Police Department’s Fifth Precinct and a new super fire station come online. Located on Mobile’s growing western boundaries near Mobile Regional Airport on Airport Blvd., the 28,480 square-foot facility is the first of its kind to be built in Alabama, with state-of-the-art public safety amenities for Police and Fire. Designed and built with the intent to centralize public safety underneath one roof, the complex includes:• 8,447 sq. ft. space for Police;
• 13,550 sq. ft. space for Fire;
• 2,242 sq. ft for public areas;
• 2,845 sq. ft. for circulation areas;
• An 852 sq. ft. gymnasium that will be used by Police and Fire;
• Dayrooms;
• Kitchen;
• Dormitory;
• Centralized Technology Room;
• A 10,000 gallon fueling station to save time and money for city vehicles;
• An alternate site for the transfer/protection of the city’s entire data system, in the event of an emergency.
The $6.5 million complex comes equipped with measures that will allow its security system to be controlled and monitored from Police Headquarters. The architect on the energy efficient facility was John Dendy and Associates and the general contractor was Rod Cook Construction Company.
In addition to providing a safe and healthy place to work, the city demonstrated its commitment to the environment by developing a control area at the facility to treat all runoff through grease traps before there is a discharge into the watershed.
The Police Department will serve a population of 38,816 and cover 76.6 square miles from the Public Safety Complex. Current Police personnel assigned to the complex include 48 sworn officers, 2 civilians, and 4 trainees.
The Fire Department will have a total of 51 personnel members assigned to the Public Safety Complex. The complex will have an Engine, ladder truck, two ambulances and a District chief responding from the location daily.
Public tours will be available today from 4 – 7 p.m.
