Neighborhood Cleanup

Oct 25th, 2004

Despite quick collection of debris left by Hurricane Ivan, city streets are still littered with leftover limbs, leaves and pine straw. If that leftover debris is not raked or swept off the streets, it will clog storm drains and could lead to street flooding. Mayor Mike Dow asks everyone to please rake or sweep up the leftover debris, place it in plastic bags and leave it on the curb for a second collection.

Private contractors with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and City of Mobile trash crews began working to clean up the city and county immediately after Hurricane Ivan did its damage. Crews have made a first collection or “pass” in many neighborhoods. Once debris has been picked up in each neighborhood once, crews will begin collecting a second time.

Until all hurricane debris is collected, the City of Mobile will not resume its regular residential trash pick up. That means for now, residents are asked to put only hurricane debris on the curb-and to please separate limbs, leaves and pine straw from construction debris.
