MPD Takes Applications for Citizens Academy

Aug 13th, 2009

The Mobile Police Department is taking applications for the next Citizens Academy to be held Tuesday evenings Sept. 15-Nov. 17 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. The free class gives the public an insight into daily police work.

In each Academy, police create a mock crime scene and participants use some of the tools of the trade to try and make sense of the scene. Classes are set up amidst a tactical operations scenario and participants are familiarized with some of the equipment and tools used for specialized operations.

The classes are taught by police officials with expertise in the given areas of instruction. All aspects of police work are covered including patrol functions, tactical operations narcotics and youth crimes, officer training, community policing, and crime scene investigation.

Participants also have the option, on a voluntary basis, to ride with a patrol officer and visit several law enforcement facilities, including Metro Jail and Communications. In addition, they are to handle firearms at the MPD Pistol Range.

Call 208-2730 or visit www.mobilepd.org to complete an application.
