MPD Announces September 2009 Officer of the Month

Officer Devin O’Shea, a two-year Mobile Police Department veteran assigned to the Third Precinct, will be awarded the honor of Officer of the Month for his exceptional performance and numerous arrests during the month of SeptemberDetails from several of the arrests for which Officer O’Shea is responsible are following:
• On Sept. 22 at 2:26 a.m., Officer O’Shea observed a suspicious person on foot at the intersection of Westwood and Dauphin Streets. Officer O’Shea stopped the subject, obtained is identification, and began checking his record for outstanding warrants. The subject, who was standing in front of the officer’s vehicle, suddenly slammed the driver’s side door on the patrol vehicle, striking Officer O’Shea in the head and causing a laceration. Although stunned and bleeding, Officer O’Shea pursued the subject on foot and took him into custody without incident. The subject subsequently confessed into breaking into approximately 20 vehicles in Midtown during the previous two nights. He was charged with Assault Second Degree and four counts of Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Vehicle.
• On Sept. 28 at 2:15 a.m., Officer O’Shea checked his computer for pending calls and discovered a call pending of an auto burglary in progress on Florence Place. Officer O’Shea then coordinated a response with other units and positioned himself on Old Shell Road while other units entered Florence Place from Springhill Avenue. The subject fled on foot and Officer O’Shea gave chase, taking him into custody. He was in possession of items from area vehicles and was charged with two counts of Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Vehicle.
• On Sept. 30 at 11:58 p.m., Third Precinct units were dispatched to an auto burglary in progress at Nathan’s Furniture, 2860 Springhill Ave. Although Officer O’Shea was not dispatched, he responded to the area and located the subject at Springhill Avenue and Western Drive. The subject was subsequently charged with Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Vehicle.
During the month of September, Officer O’Shea was responsible for making nine felony and two misdemeanor arrests, as well as answering 84 calls for service and backing fellow officers 54 times. His calm presence of mind and sheer determination aid him in removing criminals from the streets of Mobile and make him a great asset to the Mobile Police Department.
