MPD Announces August 2009 Officer of the Month

Officer Robbie Kelley, a five-year Mobile Police Department veteran assigned to the First Precinct, has been awarded the Officer of the Month for his exceptional performance during the month of AugustOfficer Kelley is responsible for the following notable arrests in August:
• On Aug. 5 at approximately 1:30 p.m., Officer Kelley was dispatched to an Individual Robbery complaint at the Check Exchange on Dauphin Island Pkwy. at Height St. Officer Kelley obtained information regarding the identity of the suspects and relayed it to fellow officers who set up a perimeter around an area home where the subjects surrendered. Two subjects were arrested and charged with Robbery First Degree.
• On Aug. 6 at 8:00 a.m., Officer Kelley was dispatched to the area of the Thomas James Public Housing Complex for a stolen vehicle complaint. While Officer Kelley was documenting the incident, the victim received a telephone call from a family member who saw the vehicle in the area. That information was relayed to patrol units in the area and the vehicle was located. Officer Kelley subsequently made a traffic stop and the subject was apprehended. Upon questioning, the subject confessed to stealing approximately 15 vehicles and Breaking and Entering three. The subject was on parole for stealing vehicles and, with this arrest, is expected to complete a 20-year sentence for vehicle theft.
• On Aug. 12 at approximately 4:00 a.m., Officer Kelley responded to 2404 Staples Rd. in response to a Burglary. The residence was occupied at the time of the incident. While completing the report, Officer Kelley heard movement on the roof of the residence. He then observed the subject jump from the roof and run from the scene. Officer Kelley followed the subject to a shed where he was hiding in a vehicle. After his backing officers arrived, Officer Kelley apprehended the subject and charged him with Burglary Second Degree.
• On Aug. 25 at approximately 1:00 a.m., Officer Kelley, along several fellow officers, located a stolen bait item on Polk Street and arrested three subjects for Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Vehicle.
During the month of August, Officer Kelley was responsible for making five felony and 11 misdemeanor arrests, as well as answering 144 calls for service and backing fellow officers on 56 calls. Officer Kelley also serves as a Field Training Officer and is a dedicated public servant who is respected by both his peers and supervisors.
