Mobile's Schools are On the Rise

Jul 23rd, 2008

There are many success stories about our schools and the students of the Mobile Public Schools. But sometimes they don't get the attention they deserve. At the July 22 Mobile City Council Meeting, Ms. Carolyn Akers, the Executive Director of the Mobile Area Education Foundation, shared some of those successes, which are quite admirable. Here are a few of them:

  • Last year’s data suggests that we have gone from 27 to 85 schools meeting proficiency and we have closed the achievement gap between poverty and non-poverty and black and white children. According to PARCA, the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama, of the 12 largest school districts in Alabama, we are performing second to Hoover.

  • The district has spent the last year translating the community voice into an action plan that is now just awaiting school board approval.

  • Thanks to Mayor Jones, we are one of seven cities in the United States that has been funded by the Department of Labor to develop our plan of action, and a report will be completed early in 2009.

  • Gaining broad community support as we head to 2011 and the renewal of our 2001 tax support
