Mobile's Campground Historic District Spotlighted by the National Register of Historic Places

Feb 8th, 2006

Mobile is being honored this year by the National Park Service and the National Register of Historic Places by being featured on its website. The Campground Historic District is among seven National Register properties being honored by the Park Service during African-American History month. The website address is: http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/feature/afam/2006/campground.htm

Primarily consisting of working class housing, the District also includes the homes the burgeoning black middle class. Professionals such as doctors, dentists, businessmen and schoolteachers built within the neighborhood. Even wealthy individuals such as Dave Patton and Dr. James A. Franklin located their homes here. The home of Dr. Franklin was recognized in November by the Mobile Historic Development Commission for its role in the history of Mobile in welcoming many important African-American traveling through the south.

The nomination was written by Shaun Wilson of the Mobile Historic Development Commission and submitted last year to the National Register. It was accepted and entered into the National Register of Historic Places on July 7, 2005. Currently, signs are being made to mark the District and a formal dedication will be held in May during Preservation Month.
