Mobile's African-American Heritage Trail Grows

Feb 11th, 2008

Union Baptist Church in the Plateau community was the focus of a grand celebration on Sunday, February 10, as descendents of the last slave ship Clotilda joined city and community leaders in celebrating “Black History Month” by officially placing a historic marker at the base of the church, which was organized in 1869. Union Baptist Church dedication marker is a part of the City of Mobile African-American Heritage Trail.

The guest speaker was Sylviane A. Diouf, author of the award winning historical account Dreams of Africa in Alabama: The Slave Ship Clotilda and the Story of the Last Africans Brought to America.

The African-American Heritage Trail is an ongoing project of the Mobile Historic Development Commission to recognize significant African American historic sites in the city. Previously dedicated markers include Emerson Institute, Saint Martin de Porres Hospital, Central/Dunbar High School and Most Pure Heart of Mary Church. When completed, the Trail will consist of 32 marker locations.
