Mobile Utilizing Federal Program to Promote Safer Routes to Schools

School children wanting to walk or bike to school are getting some much needed help as the City of Mobile has secured more than $1 million in federal grants through the Safe Routes to Schools program. The initiative involves the construction of sidewalks, improving school zone signage, and the installation of traffic control markings. The goal is to improve infrastructure around schools and to make walking to schools easier and more accessible.In Mobile, the following schools will begin to see construction today: Cranford Burns Middle School, Dodge Elementary School, ER Dickson Elementary School, Gilliard Elementary School, Holloway Elementary School, Kate Shepard Elementary School, Maryvale Elementary School, and Mobile County Training School.
The total cost of the Safe Routes to Schools program in Mobile is $1,017,377.53, and it is completely funded by federal grant money. Peavy Construction was the low bidder for the project.
