May 31st, 2007
The books are already flying off the shelves at the newly renovated and remodeled Ben May Main Library branch of the Mobile Public Library. Mayor Sam Jones, Councilmen Reggie Copeland, Fred Richardson and John Williams, Councilwoman Connie Hudson, and Mobile Public Library Spencer Watts were joined by library supporters to cut the opening ribbon.“Mobile strives to be a progressive city,” said Mayor Jones. “The foundation of a progressive city is a good library system. This new building adds to the splendor of Mobile.”
The new facility, which will have double the public space, will feature an expanded children's area, a community room and reception area, a technology center, 65 Internet accessible computers, 161 reading seats, a coffee bar with Creative Café food area and an improved southeast entrance. The original reading room will be restored to look similar to the way it did when the main library first opened in 1928.
