Mobile Police Remind the Public to Stay Safe in School Zones

Aug 17th, 2012

The Mobile Police Department reminds the public that Mobile County Public Schools are back in session beginning Monday, August 20, 2012.

Police units will be stationed at area school zones to encourage drivers to abide by school zone rules. Drivers should obey school zone speed limits, obey crossing guards and remember driving times could be increased.

Parents with walking children should remember the following rules:

• Make sure your child's walk to school is a safe route.

• Be realistic about your child's pedestrian skills. Because small children are impulsive and less cautious around traffic, carefully consider whether or not your child is ready to walk to school without adult supervision.

• If your children are young or are walking to a new school, walk with them the first week or until you are sure they know the route and can do it safely.

• In neighborhoods with higher levels of traffic, consider starting a “walking school bus,” in which an adult accompanies a group of neighborhood children walking to school.

Also, remember that the daytime curfew is back in effect. For more details, go to www.cityofmobile.org/curfew.
