Mobile Police Department Gets High Praise from Accreditation Commission

Jul 30th, 2008

The Mobile Police Department won high praise from the national Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA) for not just satisfying the technical requirements for accreditation, but for surpassing those standards. The review assessed the Department’s compliance with 459 standards considered essential for the highest levels of professionalism in law enforcement.

At its summer meeting in Boca Raton, Fl., Saturday, the CALEA commissioners reaccredited the Mobile Police Department for another three year-period ending 2011. Commissioners based their decision on the report submitted by their own assessors who spent four days in Mobile conducting an on-site review.

“I am proud of our agency and the people who have lived up to the highest levels of professional service in law enforcement,” said Police Chief Phillip Garrett. “It was a good day for the city of Mobile.”

The report by the CALEA Commissioners noted that the Department passed 98.6 percent of all standards for accreditation, far exceeding the 80 percent threshold required. The MPD passed all “mandatory” standards.

The commissioners noted that the Department provided an excellent level of service to its citizens and praised the deployment of resources to accomplish the task.
They also noted that the Mobile Police Department had strong community support, evidenced by relatively low numbers of complaints and a very positive public community meeting.
