Mobile Idol Named

Jun 30th, 2008

A 17-year-old Murphy High School female is “Mobile’s Idol” after her song was judged the best entry in the Mobile Police Department’s anti-violence contest. She will be awarded a professionally produced CD of the song along with $250 gift card to Best Buy.

The Murphy High student and two runners-up will be announced at the Mobile City Council meeting set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Government Plaza.

The song competition, open to middle school and high school students, called for submissions of rap or rock songs with an anti-violence or anti-gang message. The two runners-up also will receive awards. Second place will go to an 8th grader at Burns Middle School. A 7th grade Phillips Middle School student is the third-place winner. The second place winner will receive a $200 gift card; and the third place winner will get $175.

A similar competition for the best anti-violence poster was held in April of this year utilizing funds from the same federal grant to sponsor the event.

For the last six years, the Mobile Police Department has been offering grant-supported school programs that teach anti-violence and gang resistance.
