Mobile Home to Two Recycling Award Winners

Dec 14th, 2006

As part of Keep America Beautiful's 2006 Great American Cleanup, a goal was set to remove and recycle 30,000,000 plastic bottles from Sam's Club communities around the country. Keep Mobile Beautiful accepted the challenge and entered the "Return the Warmth" contest with six area schools participating.

These schools collected 5,790 pounds of recyclable plastic during April and May last year. Two schools placed in the top 50 participating schools in the nation: Burroughs Elementary in Theodore collected 2,002 pounds and St. Mary School in midtown Mobile collected 1,116 pounds. Each school will receive a $1,000 gift card from Sam's Club as well as a cash award from Keep Mobile Beautiful.

Each school received 1,000 fleece jackets to be donated to needy children in the Mobile area. Burroughs has chosen Volunteer Mobile to distribute their jackets and St. Mary School has chosen Catholic Service Center to distribute theirs.

The jackets are actually manufactured from recycled PET (plastic), thus the recycling circle is complete.
