Mobile Historic Development Commission Launches Historic Homeowners Grant Program

May 13th, 2011

The Mobile Historic Development Commission will launch a new Historic Homeowners Grant program at two upcoming public meetings this month. The first meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 17 from 6-7 p.m. at the Thomas Sullivan Community Center, 351 North Catherine Street. The second meeting will take place on Thursday, May 19 from 6-7 p.m. at the Texas Street Recreation Center at 540 Texas Street. Staff will available to explain the program. Applications will be distributed to attendees.

Low to moderate income owners of historic homes in the City of Mobile are eligible for up to $15,000 in grant money for exterior maintenance and repairs that are in keeping with the historic character of the property. Funds can be used for the repair or replacement of failing roofs, rotten wood, windows, doors, foundation members and other architectural details. All work must be preapproved by the MHDC Historic Homeowners Grant Committee and the Architectural Review Board. Additionally, work must be conducted by prequalified contractors. No funds will be paid out until the work is complete and inspected. The grant is forgiven over a five-year period as a silent second mortgage.

Applications will be accepted through June 30 with work to begin on approved properties shortly thereafter.
