Paper Recycling Facts
*Paper accounts for approximately 35% of all solid waste in the United States.
*Every year, enough paper is thrown away to make a 12 foot wall from New York to California.
*Americans use approximately 85,000,000 tons of paper each year. That's about 680 pounds per person.
*The average household throws away 13,000 separate pieces of paper each year….most of that is packaging and junk mail.
*Approximately 80% of this paper can be recovered for recycling.
*Americans only recycle about 50% of the paper they use.
*For every ton of paper that is recycled, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space is saved.
*37% ofthe raw material used to make new paper and paperboard comes from recycled paper.
*Making recycled paper is 60% cheaper than making virgin paper and generates 95% less air pollution.
*Most of the trees that are used to make paper today are grown on working forests and harvested just like a crop. For every tree harvested to make paper, 3 new trees are planted to ensure an abundant supply of this renewable resource.
*If all of our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year.
*Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees. These 17 trees can absorb a total of 250 pounds of carbon dioxide from the air each year. Burning that same ton of paper would create 1500 pounds of carbon dioxide.
*Schools and workplaces generate the most paper that can be recycled.
