Middle Passage Museum to Hold Press Conference at Government Plaza

Tuesday, January 7th, Jim and Mary Anne Petty, owners of a 15,000-item African-American artifact collection, will name Mobile as the selected city for the establishment of the Middle Passage Museum - the permanent home for their collection. Immediately after the 12 O’clock noon City Council Meeting, the Pettys will make the official announcement at a Press Conference in the Atrium of Government Plaza. All media representatives are invited to attend.Various cities from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Pennsylvania were under consideration. The Petty’s desire to locate their museum in the coastal South combined with the positive reception received here resulted in their decision to select Mobile. Having one the largest collections of its kind in the world, the Middle Passage Museum will be an unprecedented museum and premier research and preservation epicenter for African-American history and culture.
A portion of their collection will be on display at the Museum of Mobile, 111 South Royal Street, January 17th-19th. Admission for the Middle Passage exhibit will be $5.00. Admission to the Museum of Mobile’s exhibit galleries is included in this charge. Call 208.7652 for details.
