MHDC to Hold Public Meeting Regarding Proposed Africatown Historic District

The Mobile Historic Development Commission will be holding a public hearing on the proposed Africatown Historic District, which is being considered for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The district is nationally significant as the location of the community established by the last group of Africans brought to the United States in 1860 onboard the slaveship, Clotilda.

The proposed district’s boundaries will correspond roughly with Jakes Lane to the north, Railroad Street to the west, Chin Street to the south and Paper Mill Road to the east. Representatives from the Alabama Historical Commission, Councilman William Carroll, and the president of the Mobile Historic Development Commission are scheduled to be in attendance to answer any questions. Residents of Africatown are encouraged to attend. The National Register of Historic Places is the official national list of historic properties worthy of preservation. Listing in the National Register provides recognition and assists in preserving our nation’s heritage.
