Metro Transit Adds Taxi-style Neighborhood Service

Apr 14th, 2004

[Mobile, Al] Metro Transit announces expanded service in two locations as part of the 2004 Transit Improvement Program. The new service hubs are located at Providence Hospital and Wal-Mart in Tillman's Corner and will begin running on May 3, 2004. The buses will move around a geographic area around Providence Hospital and in the Tillman’s Corner area giving greater transportation flexibility to the riders.

"After months of public hearings and working closely with neighborhood residents to determine the needs of riders, we are happy to make most of the changes our customers asked for and we are excited to better meet the needs of riders through our new Neighborhood Service program, says Bob Williams, General Manager of Metro Transit.

The Neighborhood service will provide custom service for riders by calling Metro Transit at 251-344-5656. The service will be customer-driven, meaning that riders can call one day in advance to reserve the bus for curb-to-curb service within the new areas.

In addition to this new and innovative service, Metro Transit is introducing other improvements to the system. A new route service (#18 Cottage Hill/ USA) to the University of South Alabama is being introduced. Expanded service to Providence Hospital, Springhill Hospital, and Mobile Infirmary will be available also. Finally, service frequencies on heavily used routes have been increased.

Meetings will be held during the month of April to educate riders about the new service areas, and the finalized plans. They are: Tuesday, April 20 at 10:00 am and 3:00 pm
Thursday, April 22, at 10:00 am and 3:00 pm
Thursday, April 29 at 10:00 am and 3:00 pm
All these will be held at the GM&O Transportation Center, 110 Beauregard Street, Suite 104, Mobile, Al 36602.
